Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is out on Switch 2: what to know before buying

Nintendo has released Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, the latest entry in its tactical role-playing series. The game launched on September 17, 2026, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 and is not available on the original Nintendo Switch.

Fortune’s Weave combines turn-based tactical combat, character development, world exploration and four interconnected story paths. Time travel is central to the adventure: players must change the heroes’ fates in the past to prevent the destruction of their world.

What is Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave about?

The story takes place on the continent of Dagda. In the year 1454, the Dagdan Empire is facing ruin following the return of Balor, a resurrected demon god.

A soul summoned by the goddess Sothis is tasked with stopping the disaster. With help from Fortuna, a goddess capable of traveling through time, the protagonist can return five years into the past and change the fates of four warriors.

Much of the past storyline revolves around the Heroic Games in the capital city of Dagsion. The winner of the competition will be granted one wish.

The four central heroes are:

  • Cai, a young boy trying to free his imprisoned father;

  • Dietrich, a swordsman searching for a stronger opponent;

  • Theodora, a queen pursuing her homeland’s long-held dream;

  • Leda, a musician seeking revenge.

Their stories can be played in parallel. Players are free to pause one path and switch to another without losing their progress.

How combat works

Fortune’s Weave retains the tactical foundation of the Fire Emblem series. Players command individual units in turn-based battles on grid-based maps.

Positioning, attack range, weapons, magic, character classes and terrain can all determine the outcome of a fight. Battles range from smaller encounters to large matches with special objectives and rules.

The four heroes can use powerful signature techniques called Blaze Arts. These moves consume health and fill a special Blaze Gauge. Reaching the middle of the gauge provides a temporary bonus, but completely filling it triggers a Burst effect that removes the bonus and cuts the hero’s maximum health in half.

Players who make a tactical mistake can rewind a limited number of turns and try a different approach. Nintendo says the mechanics are introduced gradually, giving newcomers time to understand the systems.

What can you do between battles?

Between major encounters, players can explore Dagsion and prepare their teams. Activities include recruiting allies, improving Blessings at temples, training skills and strengthening relationships at inns.

Players can also leave the city and explore the world map to:

  • complete optional quests;

  • gather resources;

  • fight roaming enemies for experience;

  • explore dungeons;

  • find weapons and other equipment.

The class system allows characters to develop in different directions if they meet the relevant skill requirements. A character can be trained as a mage, a mounted unit or another available class.

Fortune’s Weave also introduces classes inspired by Dagda’s ancient Mediterranean setting. These include an ornius rider mounted on an ostrich-like animal, a chariot-based class and an elephant rider.

Do you need to play the previous Fire Emblem games?

Fortune’s Weave takes place in the same world as Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Dagda lies south of Fódlan, and some characters from Three Houses make an appearance.

However, it is not designed as a direct sequel. The story takes place in a different region and time period, with a new central conflict and cast.

In an official developer interview, the team said the game was created so players could fully enjoy it without being familiar with Three Houses. Newcomers can therefore start with Fortune’s Weave, while returning fans will recognize additional connections to the earlier game.

Should you buy Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave?

Fortune’s Weave is primarily aimed at players who enjoy turn-based strategy, large casts and role-playing games built around character development. Its four-path structure allows players to follow several perspectives, experiment with different classes and eventually bring their recruited characters together for the final conflict.

No previous Fire Emblem experience is required. Before buying, however, players should remember that the game is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, requires approximately 27.5 GB of storage and does not include Ukrainian or Russian localization.
