Android Switch is Google’s system app for copying data from an old phone or tablet to a new Android device. It is mainly used during initial device setup and supports transfers from both Android and iOS devices.

The app is already installed on most compatible Android devices. When setting up a new phone, users can choose to copy their data and follow the instructions displayed on both devices.

What Android Switch can transfer

The available data categories depend on the old and new devices, their operating system versions and the selected connection method.

Android Switch may transfer:

  • a Google Account;

  • contacts and calendar events;

  • photos, videos, music and other files;

  • SMS and MMS messages with attachments;

  • call history;

  • installed apps;

  • selected device settings;

  • saved Wi-Fi networks;

  • supported passwords and passkeys;

  • eligible WhatsApp chats and media.

Users can select which categories they want to copy before starting the transfer. Apps are generally downloaded again from Google Play, so an internet connection may be required to complete their installation.

Moving from Android or iPhone

Two Android devices can be paired wirelessly, including with a QR code, or connected with a compatible cable. A cable may provide a faster and more stable connection when transferring a large photo or video library.

When moving from an iPhone or iPad, Android Switch may offer a wireless or cable transfer depending on the devices and selected content. A cable may be required to copy certain types of information.

After switching from an iPhone, users should check their iMessage and FaceTime settings to ensure that new messages reach the Android device. Photos and videos stored only in iCloud may need to be transferred separately to Google Photos.

Things to consider

Not every type of data can be copied automatically. Information saved inside manufacturer-specific apps or protected by an app’s security policies may remain on the old device. Banking apps, authenticators, digital wallets and some messaging services commonly require a new sign-in or additional setup.

Before starting, charge both devices, connect them to Wi-Fi, update important apps and create a backup of the old phone. Users should also have the old device’s screen lock code and their Google Account credentials available.

Do not erase or factory-reset the old device until all important photos, messages, files and accounts have been checked on the new phone.

How to install and use Android Switch

To install or update Android Switch, tap the download button on this page. Because it is a system component on most Android devices, Google Play may display an “Update” button instead of “Install”.

Android Switch normally opens automatically during the setup of a new phone. Pixel 9 and newer models can also use it to add more data after initial setup has been completed.
