Messenger for Android: Chats and Calls

Messenger is Meta’s communication app for Android. It brings one-to-one and group conversations together with voice and video calls, photo sharing, and other ways to keep in touch. It is useful for everyday chats with friends and family, as well as coordinating plans or sharing updates in a group.

What you can do in Messenger

• Chat and call: Send messages and make voice or video calls to people you connect with on Facebook and Messenger. A phone number is not required to find those contacts through the services.
• Share media and files: Send photos, videos, stickers, GIFs, and documents in conversations. The Google Play listing describes file sharing up to 100 MB.
• Organise group conversations: Share photos and videos in shared albums, and use chat themes, reactions, and other expressive features to make conversations easier to follow and personalise.
• Manage messages: Edit a sent message within the available editing window, or use disappearing messages in eligible end-to-end encrypted chats.
• Follow public updates: Join creators’ channels to read their posts and react. Channels are a one-way format, rather than private group chats.

Everyday ways to use it

Use Messenger to arrange a family gathering, share trip photos in a group album, send a document to a colleague, or catch up with someone by call. Stories and Notes offer a separate way to share brief updates that are designed to disappear after 24 hours.

Meta AI features can answer questions and help create or edit images in supported locations and languages. Availability is not universal, so do not rely on these tools being present in every country or language.

Things to consider

Messenger is free to install, but Google Play lists in-app purchases. The app’s features are most useful when the people you want to contact are reachable through Facebook or Messenger. Some options may depend on your region, language, account, device, or app version. For encrypted chats, take care with secure storage and recovery settings: Meta’s help information explains that deleting secure storage can permanently remove the encrypted chat history stored there.
